US Travel Restrictions Force Air France Flight Diversion Amid Ebola Concerns
The aircraft, which was operating a scheduled transatlantic route on Wednesday, was redirected after officials determined that the passenger should not have been allowed to board under the updated US entry rules. “Due to entry restrictions put in place to reduce the risk of the Ebola virus, the passenger should not have boarded the plane,” a US Customs and Border Protection spokesperson told media outlets. The airline confirmed that no medical emergency occurred during the flight.
The diversion comes shortly after the United States introduced stricter travel controls aimed at limiting potential exposure to Ebola. Under the revised policy, passengers traveling from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, and Uganda are only permitted entry into the US via Washington Dulles International Airport.
Several other countries have also adjusted their border and travel policies in response to the outbreak situation. Bahrain and Jordan have suspended entry for foreign travelers coming from affected African states, while countries such as Burundi, Zambia, and Tanzania have increased screening and border monitoring. Rwanda has additionally temporarily closed its border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The current outbreak in the region, associated with the Bundibugyo strain, has reportedly led to at least 139 suspected deaths and 543 suspected infections, based on health ministry figures.
The virus is believed to originate in fruit bats and can spread to humans through contact with infected animals before transmitting between people via bodily fluids. At present, there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment available, and the World Health Organization has declared the situation a global public health emergency.
Separately, concerns over the outbreak have drawn international attention. A Russian foreign ministry spokesperson described reports of Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda as “a cause of concern” and expressed expectations that local authorities and international partners would work to contain the spread. The official also stated that Russia is ready to provide “every possible assistance and support” in addressing the outbreak.
